Paddy Odwyer, Site Foreman and Chairman for the Health and Safety Committee at Maiden Group, has not only played a major role in shaping Health and Safety at Maiden Group, but also throughout Canterbury.
Paddy is a member of the Canterbury Rebuild Safety Charter, and his role is to find different ways of improving Health and Safety in Canterbury. Paddy has helped Maiden Group become one of the leading building companies to develop new Health and Safety approaches. As Paddy confirms:
“We are really at the forefront for Health and Safety in Canterbury. Our team have been working hard to make sure everyone is safe, and our staff are engaged in making a difference.”
“I have always been interested in finding new ways to ensure our workers are safe. The skills you learn are a necessity in this high-risk industry, and it’s about time things changed.
“Inductions are a really important part of making sure all of our workers are safe. Forward planning alleviates issues. We always aim to catch up with subbies, a week before they are on site. We run through hazards, site specific issues, and paper work, so they are ready to go.
“A toolbox talk once a week is another important part of our Health and Safety policy. It gives everyone a chance to run through any issues, and together we work out an approach going forward.”
Paddy has been recently interviewed for Safeguard Magazine, and New Zealand’s Health and Safety Magazine.
Keep up the good work Paddy!
